Early afternoons in the beginning of July
Summer slips through my fingers. At least music can capture the special moments forever.
Heat Waves by Glass Animals.
The feeling this tune evokes is purely unique. Practically coming-of-age.
Starting with mellowed guitar instrumentals, the song switches into a powerful collection of electronic beats and instruments, carrying out catchy lyrics.
The chorus particulars lures the listener in. Harmonies, summery vocals, and gentle instrumentals curate a perfect play for a middle-of-summer car ride with friends, windows down and breeze overtaking worry into joy. I envision this because of the lyrics:
Road shimmer / Wiggling the vision / Heat, heat waves / I'm swimming in the mirror
The piece was born in the studio on a late night in May of 2018. The eight chords came first, then with further exploration came the hook, beginning with:
Sometimes all I think about is you
The lyrics have fragmented meaning throughout. Lead singer of the group Dave Bayley wrote on Twitter along with the release of the record, "it's about realising you can't make everyone happy..."
Another example is that Bayley also mentioned that the time around June is tough for him as he had lost a loved one whose birthday was during that time. Since the writing occurred late at night, this significance falls into the words:
Late nights in the middle of June
There is also a version of the song featuring Iann Dior; definitely worth checking out!
If you click on the album cover below, you can listen or re-listen to "Heat Waves" by Glass Animals on YouTube. "Take A Slice" by them also has an incredible feel. Let me know thoughts, emotions, ideas, sparks, creations, or memories that come up while the instruments hum into your ears.
