Do you prefer skating or ballet?
Hello again! I am not oblivious to the irony that I said I would be posting a song everyday, and yet here I am exactly a month later with my first real post. The struggle is that I barely have a moment to myself lately, which is not a complaint, especially since being busy (or even finding something to do) during this pandemic is a strike of luck. More like, an attempt at an explanation. Anyways, while I will be making my very best effort to do justice to the title of this blog and post "a song a day," the grueling tasks of a high school student may end up taking over my day, stealing the title of the reigning melody, hoarding it in its clutched claws until the day is done and I have pushed the 'submit' button at least 17 times... but to hand in my homework, not to post on this blog :( Well, enough excuses, you get the point.
Without further ado, the song of the day is... *drumroll please*
Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne.
Okay, I know, I know. I know what you're thinking. It's 2021! The song did indeed come out 19 years ago, in 2002. But I wanted to start off my blog with this title because I think it is important to recognize the timelessness of music. The song is great. Still. It's a classic, what can I say? The rock-inspired tone with a heavy presence of electric guitar, drums, and Avril's very on-point 2000s vocals create the perfect 'don't judge a book by its cover' anthem.
My sister was the one to show me the song. She's a 90s baby. Capricorn. Moving on, I still remember jamming out to the song in our living room together and putting all the passion we had towards anything into hitting all the notes and getting them just right. We knew in that moment: we WERE Avril. We were she, she was we. She and I could sing it with such meaning and flame that there was no way we WEREN'T splitting a soul with Ms. Lavigne herself. Anyways, the song invokes memories from the early years of the 2010s, and being disappointed that the music video was just Avril singing and driving around with her band and not actually about a bratty ballerina and a punk skater boy.
On another note, I do need to say: this is a Judge-Free Zone, and I mean this sincerely. Listening to a certain type of music does not define who one is as a person, and that is actually one of the reasons I wanted to start this blog in the first place — to expand my music taste. Also, the song of the day does not necessarily mean that the artist singing the song stands for everything I stand for or I completely agree with everything about the song, but it does mean that listening to the song (whether it is because of the melody, lyrics, bass line, guitar solo, drum pattern, or harmonies) significantly brightened my mood or sparked something new in me — mind, body, or soul.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend that everybody seeing this logs in to their Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube (or whatever other streaming platform you use to listen to your favorite tunes) and listen or re-listen to "Sk8er Boi" by Avril Lavigne. You could also just click the album cover below and it'll take you right to the music video. Let me know thoughts, emotions, ideas, sparks, creations, or memories that come up while the instruments hum into your ears.
Come back tomorrow for (hopefully) a new post!
Warm regards,
Nai
